CCTST Workforce Development Highlights Research 101 in Chennai, India

Jason Blackard, PhD, who leads pipeline and community outreach for the CCTST Workforce Development program, recently spoke with medical students and faculty at Madha Medical College and Research Institute in Chennai, India about the importance of scholarly activity. During his presentation, he discussed the Research 101 series developed by the Workforce Development team.





Research 101 is a set of modules designed to introduce trainees at a variety of levels to multiple topics that are relevant to the conduct of research, including:


  • Introduction to research

  • Aligning expectations

  • Identifying a research mentor and a research project

  • Study design and data analysis basics

  • Submitting an Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol

  • Conducting a literature search

  • Introduction to human subjects research and protections

  • Presenting our research

  • Introduction to team science

  • Transparency, rigor, and reproducibility in research

  • Evaluating the literature and presenting a journal club

  • Effective writing for publication

  • NIH grant basics
