DISSEMINATION & IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE

Active Implementation Formula - National Implementation Research Network

Why Study Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) Science?

D&I science can help bridge the gap between research and practice by:

  • Building an actionable and pragmatic knowledge base to help understand determinants of implementation and dissemination.

  • Developing strategies to accelerate and improve scale up and spread of effective innovations to prevent and control chromic disease.

  • Improving healthcare and public health practice to increase population health.

How does d&I science relate to learning health systems?

Learning health systems are designed to accelerate the creation and implementation of innovations to improve patient and population outcomes by rapidly integrating internal knowledge with external evidence. D&I science is one necessary capability to enable this, but a learning health system also needs responsive and accurate data systems, incentives to support innovation a culture of learning to be successful. The Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) had identified 33 competencies for LHS researchers categorized across 7 domains. Implementation Science is one of the competency domains.

The CCHMC Learning Health Systems Model considers Implementation Science to be a foundational capability. Several steps of the model require timely dissemination of research findings and learning, identification of implementation barriers, and evidence based implementation strategies to ensure adoption and sustainability.

CCTST D&I Consultations

CCTST members can request a D&I consultation through Research Central.

Before requesting a consultation, please review the selected readings from the D&I literature and introduction to D&I videos/presentations provided below under “D&I Info & Resources”.

additional D&I OPPORTUNITIES & Resources

CTSA Compendium of D&I Catalogs

A curated list of resource catalogs relevant to D&I science and practice. This catalog was developed by the Clinical & Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program’s “Advancing Dissemination and Implementation Sciences in CTSAs” working group.

D&I Toolkits

These self-service toolkits are an ideal starting point for investigators interested in D&I science.

All were developed by the Dissemination and Implementation Research Core (DIRC) at Washington University.

Implementation Science Exchange

A one-stop resource for implementation science researchers. Includes a variety of D&I resources, such as successfully funded sample grant proposals, theories/frameworks on Implementation Science and Organizational Theory, journals that publish related research, networking opportunities, and more. Created by North Carolina Translational & Clinical Sciences Institute.

D&I Training Opportunities

Outlines a list of training opportunities (workshops, conferences, graduate training programs, fellowships, and online training resources) pertaining to D&I science.

Creation of this list is a joint project between the Society for Implementation Research Collaboration (SIRC) and the Association for Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) Dissemination & Implementation Science Special Interest Group (DIS SIG).
