Intro to Community Advisory Boards

Bidirectional benefits for community and academic partners

Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are an important tool for community-engaged research (CEnR). CABs offer community members a way to be involved in their community, network, develop professional skills, and impact research and healthcare that impact themselves, their families, and their communities. For academic institutions, CABs can help increase the reach, rigor, and relevance of their research, thus increasing their success in translating research to improving outcomes.

Three Phases of CABs

  • Clarifying CAB purpose, function, and roles

  • Determining membership, composition, and recruitment

  • Establishing operating principles

  • Establishing leadership, balancing power, and decision making

  • Evaluating partnership processes

  • Determining next steps
