Dissemination Initiative for Research and Community-based Translation (DIRECT)
ABOUT DIRECT
DIRECT stands for Dissemination Initiative for Research and Community-based Translation. Our team includes researchers, community partners, health promotion specialists, graphic and communication designers, and implementation scientists. We use co-design methods to empower researchers to translate their findings into the proper form and content for policymakers, participants, practitioners, communities, and institutions. We do this through dissemination toolkits, research return resources, tailored designs, and strategic consultation.

DISSEMINATION TOOL KITS
Dissemination toolkits equip anyone sharing their health science communication beyond academia, regardless of design skills. DIRECT's first toolkit provides a modular "kit of parts" for composing a one-page summary in Canva or PowerPoint.
Note: The Canva and PowerPoint "kit of parts" are still in development and unavailable until we run them through usability testing to improve them.

RESEARCH RETURN RESOURCES
Research return resources guide you in sharing health science communication throughout a project's lifecycle, not only after journal publication. DIRECT's first research return resource is a communications guide for researchers, authored by Monica Johnson, featuring generative questions that focus attention on audience, relevant media, and other key factors.

CUSTOMIZED DESIGNS
As DIRECT refines its tools, methods, and processes, we collaborate with researchers to tailor the communication of their health science findings across media. Our team began with one-page summaries, as these are universal in research, and the literature lacks guidance on creating effective one-pagers, especially for those without graphic or communication design expertise.
