UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN CLINICAL & TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE

PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Undergraduate Certificate in Clinical and Translational Science is offered by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The Certificate program is geared towards students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs at UC who are interested in gaining knowledge and experience in biomedical research. Course topics include: an overview of clinical and translational science, ethics, introduction to clinical trials, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and team-based research skills. The goal of the Certificate program is to prepare graduates to enter the workforce as clinical research staff.

Upon completion of the Certificate program, students will be able to:

  • Explain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) according to the NIH.

  • Summarize the fundamental processes of clinical and translational science, including participant recruitment, addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, data collection and management, study site management, and financial management to support clinical research activities.

  • Describe the stages of clinical trials and their relevant regulatory components.

  • Demonstrate project management and communication skills in a team-based research setting.

  • Connect the goals and outcomes of clinical and translational research to impacts in patient care and population health.

CURRICULUM & COURSE INFORMATION

The Certificate requires 12 credit hours of coursework which can be completed on either a full-time or part-time basis.

Eligible applicants must be current students at UC in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  Application requirements include:

  • Personal Statement: Your background and career goals statement should describe your personal history and the factors that have brought you to where you are now, educationally and/or professionally. Include any past experience relevant to research, or future hopes to work in this field. It should also describe why you are interested in this program and how the program supports your career goals.

  • At least one letter of recommendation. This letter should ideally be from a professional or academic reference (e.g., work manager or faculty member).
